The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven

December 12, 2016

One day, after much work and laboring with His disciples and with the people, Jesus hears the men talking among themselves about something serious on the topic of the kingdom. It had nothing to do with how you will get there. Nor was it a question on what the kingdom of heaven is like. The disciples asked:

“Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Matthew 18:1

For me personally, I would have never asked such a question because the only person who is GREAT and WONDERFUL is GOD.

But to my amazement Jesus did have a response to the question. There is a person who is greater without carrying the title of the Most High God.

“Then Jesus called a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.  Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me.”   Matthew 18:2-5

Now let’s look at the characteristics of small children, since they’re the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

When Jesus called the little child he came right over. When God is pulling you to pray or do the right thing, are you respondingꟷ are you listening.

Children trust that their parents will take care of them and there will be food on the table. Do you believe God will to take care of your every need?

Children have faith there’s always more, they have high expectations of wonderful things to come and they’re forgiving.

It’s a dangerous thing to be so prideful a person doesn’t pray and they lack understanding God is near.

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea.  Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!” Matthew 18:6-7

The transgressions in the world can lead kids away from God. Therefore, it’s a wonderful idea for all of us to help them pursue the kingdom of God.

Be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven and humble yourself when you come to God with any and every need.
