Several years ago I was privileged to meet a woman who made one awful mistake. When she was a teenager, she was physically intimate with her prom date and got pregnant. I stood there listening to her story on how she was overcome with the guilt of having an abortion. I don’t remember her name but she showed me a cute pendant of an infant child’s little feet during the 1st trimester.
She used her personal experience for something good, helping young mothers-to-be. She helps them choose life for the child. Therefore, she sought God’s forgiveness and the self-condemnation she felt for many years healed…No longer carrying so much self-pity and she was able to help a new generation.
Thankfully, we know in scripture there is hope for every individual to have salvation and they are free from guilt and shame. The problem for some who repent of their sins comes from the condemnation they receive from others or from themselves. It’s easy for self-righteous people to judge people who fall short, but the most important thing of all is to realize how people get caught up in sin and the fast life because it’s all they’ve ever known. Hopefully these individuals who are lost will have the opportunity to receive salvation.
It’s dangerous to judge others because somewhere, somehow while you judge the life of that person who chose to live life the way they do, some are confronted with the same sins they judged that one committed some time ago. Remember what Jesus said, “Judge not, that you be not judged” (Matthew 7:1).
What’s important to know is that we can’t live the Christian life with our own human abilities…We have the Holy Spirit to guide us in truth and righteousness.
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
What we read in Romans 8:1 tells us that there is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made us free from the law of sin and death! Therefore, the life of Jesus is exactly what the Holy Spirit gives those who are willing to be guided by His Spirit. We are dead to the flesh, sinful living and self-gratification.
